Long walk/run with my sister today.

I took her on a 3.6-kilometer route, most of which we walked. She’s in good shape (~130 lbs maybe - she’s your average 19-year-old), but she really hates running. We only ran maybe 7 or 8 minutes today, but we also walked for a good 40 minutes, so that’s not so bad. I’m hoping she’ll come running with me more often this summer, so we can both get better! I wish I could’ve run a little more today, but I don’t want her to feel she’s holding me back or anything.

Anyway. LOVING this gorgeous weather (mid-20s celsius in March!!)

First run of the season!

I didn’t log any times because I honestly haven’t run since September 2011 (due to a bum ankle) and wanted to take it very slow. I ran probably 50-60% of this and walked the rest. It felt really good!

I’ve been super absent lately, but I just threw some stuff into my blender and it came out as the most delicious thing ever:
1 large-ish banana
~1/2 cup chocolate almond milk
2 ice cubes
1 teaspoon peanut butter
Oh my god, yum. Not quite the texture of a milkshake, but pretty darn close for something with no dairy. And the PB and almond milk give it this amazing nutty flavour! LOVE THIS. Definitely my favourite thing I’ve ever made in my blender. ~220 calories, and the serving size is huge.

You go, Glen Coco!

Oh my god, I used to listen to this as part of my C25K mix! SUCH a good motivator.

New fitness classes

I went to Zumba as usual this Monday (which I liked a lot again - yay!), and tried two new ones on Wednesday:

  1. Cardio Kickboxing. This was actually a lot of fun, and I kept up surprisingly well. I was pleased to see I wasn’t the only ‘bigger’ girl in the class, but I did substantially better than the others (I think because I’m used to working hard, but these girls are probably just starting out). Anyway, it was a seriously good workout, and I didn’t mind it at all, although I was quite sore at the end!
  2. Groove. This was a sort of new-age-y dance class, where the instructor talked a lot about “exploring the space” and that kind of thing. I enjoyed it, but it was a little slow-paced for me. I think I prefer to be challenged a bit more.

Anyway - I’m happy to have tried them and will probably go back to kickboxing again!

Circuits class kicked my ASS tonight.

My sister and I went to a fitness class tonight called ‘Circuits’, which involved different stations for strength, core and cardio workouts. You spend two minutes doing intense work at each station, then have ten seconds to switch stations. There were eight stations and we did each of them twice, plus warm-ups, a group workout in the middle, and a cool-down/stretch session. About an hour total.

The workout was difficult even for my sister, who is about 130 lbs and in great shape. Considering I’m more than twice her weight I’m just pleased that I got through it. I don’t know that I’d go to this class again - it was a little too hardcore for me, and I just didn’t enjoy it. But I did it.

On the other hand, I did a zumba class on Monday and I liked it a lot, so I’m planning on going back to that one every week for the rest of the term :)

I have a really good feeling about 2012.

My sister and I are buying $50 ‘fitness shoe tags’ from our school, which allows us to drop in on as many fitness classes as we want all term. I’m really excited about it. I’ve never done the fitness classes before, but there are a lot of them - zumba, cardio, yoga, core workouts, flexibility training, all kinds of things. My sister and I are going to do one zumba class per week and hopefully a circuits class as well, and I might check out either a flex class or another zumba class on my own. Those, along with some solo gym time, should have me feeling good all term.

I’m also excited to begin eating well again. I’ve put on a couple pounds over the holidays and it’s made me feel very sluggish. I’m going to put a real emphasis on eating fresh this term - lots of fruits and veggies, lots of water, and lots of whole grains. Less processed stuff.

It’s crazy how much I’m anticipating a return to exercise. I miss running, so much.

Updates/Review

As much as I’ve been trying to avoid this realization, it has come: I basically haven’t lost any weight since the start of November. That’s about 6 weeks of being stuck at the same weight. It’s probably the worst “plateau” I’ve had since beginning this whole endeavour back in September 2010.

I put “plateau” in quotation marks, however, because this is not a real plateau. I know exactly why I haven’t been losing; it’s no mystery. My eating habits have been bad. I haven’t been able to run since hurting my ankle. And I just don’t have the time, energy or means to get much other exercise right now. It’s no excuse, but it’s true.

So here’s the plan. From now until Christmas I’d like to maintain my current weight (~283-284 lbs). It’s the holidays - I’m not going to stress about it.

However, come January, I am going to kick my ass into gear. I’ll be eating better and exercising more (I’ll have a free gym available to me, so even if my ankle still hurts, I can find a way to work out). I’ll go to my sports doctor and get the ankle looked at, and if necessary I’ll spend some time in physio to heal it.

Once I finish my horrible temp job here and get back home - to my family, to university, to living the life I want to lead - I know I’ll do better. I always have. It’s just a matter of surviving these last two weeks in the city and getting the hell out.
